There's music in the air along the Gulf Coast every summer during the annual Victoria Bach Festival, a radiant jewel among the nation's cultural attractions. The weeklong Festival offers a varied repertoire of orchestral, choral and chamber music by baroque, classical, romantic and contemporary composers and features performances by nationally acclaimed artists.
Led by Artistic Director Craig Hella Johnson, the VBF enjoys a buzz among music lovers as one of the finest festivals in the U.S. Johnson's impeccable direction and the level of excellence fostered at festival performances inspire musicians as well as audiences. Soloists and orchestral and choral musicians from across the U.S. and Canada look forward to gathering in Victoria each summer to work with Johnson to produce music of the very highest level of musicianship.
Free noontime "Around the Town" programs are presented daily during festival week at various venues, including the Nave Museum, City Square, Victoria Mall, restaurants and churches. Pre-concert lecture receptions and illuminating program notes enhance audience enjoyment. Musical events such as Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham are presented each spring for area students, with an additional evening family performance.
Each year several young professional musicians are given a unique opportunity to develop their craft and perform in an atmosphere of fine musicianship through the "New Young Artist" Series. They participate in evening performances and programs for the Boys and Girls Clubs, Victoria Library, service clubs, and residents in long-term care facilities. MusiCamp for Kids, a partnership with Victoria College, is held each morning of festival week.
Hailed by National Public Radio as "a Texas treasure" and "the best kept little secret in Texas," the Festival has been featured each year on broadcasts of NPR's Performance Today. And in the year 2000, the Texas Commission on the Arts tagged the VBF as one of the "Top Ten Hot Summer Events."
