| Mendelssohn | Octet for Strings in E-flat major |
| Fauré | Piano Quartet no. 1 in C minor |
| Dohnányi | Rhapsody for Piano Solo |
Happy Romanticism may seem like a contradiction, but the passion that wells up in these works comes not from anguish or anger—it springs from sheer joy. Mendelssohn composed his Octet for strings at age 16, and 20 years later still regarded it as a favorite work. Fauré's first piano quartet offers a refined, reflective Romanticism. Melissa Marse performs Dohnányi's Rhapsody, a fast and furious romp across the keyboard.
